As an independent wedding celebrant, I’m lucky enough to witness so many wonderfully personal touches woven into each ceremony I lead. Every couple brings something unique to their day, something that reflects who they are, their story, and the people they love.
Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of officiating a beautiful wedding where one detail stood out in the most memorable way, the bridal and bridesmaid bouquets, and buttonholes weren’t made from fresh flowers at all, they were lovingly crocheted by a close family member.
They were absolutely stunning.
Delicate, colourful, and full of character, each flower had been handmade with incredible care and attention. They looked beautiful in photographs, added such a personal touch to the ceremony, and carried far more emotional meaning than any traditional florist arrangement ever could.
It was a perfect reminder that wedding flowers don’t have to be fresh to be unforgettable.
Why Couples Are Choosing Alternatives to Fresh Flowers
Fresh flowers will always have their place in weddings, they’re timeless, romantic, and undeniably beautiful. But more and more couples are exploring alternatives that feel more personal, practical, sustainable, or simply a little different.
Your wedding should reflect you, and that includes the details you carry down the aisle.
Whether you're planning with sustainability in mind, working to a budget, honouring family traditions, or simply looking for something unique, there are so many lovely alternatives to consider.
Crocheted Flowers: Handmade Memories That Last Forever
Crocheted bouquets are becoming increasingly popular, and it’s easy to see why.
They offer all the beauty of floral arrangements, but with something extra, sentiment.
When they’re handmade by someone special, like a parent, grandparent, sibling, or close friend, they become more than a bouquet. They become a keepsake. A family heirloom. A reminder of love stitched into every petal.
They also:
last forever
won’t wilt or fade
can be made in any colour or flower style
work beautifully for destination weddings
make wonderful keepsakes after the day
And perhaps most importantly, they tell a story.
Your Wedding, Your Way
One of the things I love most as a celebrant is seeing couples step away from “what weddings are supposed to look like” and instead create something that feels truly theirs.
There are no rules.
That’s what makes weddings memorable.
Not perfection.
Meaning.
And those crocheted flowers I saw recently? They were a beautiful reminder that sometimes the most unforgettable details are the ones made with love, not ordered from a catalogue.
Planning a Ceremony That Feels Personal?
As an independent wedding celebrant, I believe the most beautiful ceremonies are the ones filled with personality, warmth, and meaningful details that reflect your story.
Whether it’s handwritten vows, family traditions, or a bouquet that lasts forever, it’s those personal touches that make your wedding truly unforgettable.
